About us
Rabbi Elazar said in the name of Rabbi Hanina: [Torah] scholars increase peace in the world, as it states (Isaiah 54:13): “And all your children [banayikh] shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children”. Do not read: “[banayikh] children” but rather: “[bonayikh] your builders…” (Brakhot, 64a)
Already 1500 years ago, the Babylonian Talmud highlighted the necessity of scholarship to usher in peace amongst the chaos and conflict of the world. In our increasingly complex world today, this message should ring loudly to all of us.
With this in mind, The Jewish Stand is proud to present you our vision for fostering the next generation of builders tasked with the responsibility of working towards that peaceful world.
The Problem
Faced with constant protests and aggression at the University of Leeds, a few dedicated defenders of Jews and the State of Israel set up tables to raise awareness on antisemitism and present the proud Jewish voice to the rest of campus. We showed Leeds Uni campus what genuine campaigning for peace looks like. The outpouring of public support from the vast majority of campus was immense.
We realised two things. Firstly, the urgent need for more individuals to speak out and promote peace.
Secondly, we realised the incredible role for young advocates, Jews and friends, to study and disseminate accurate knowledge in areas we are challenged with on a near-daily basis.
Whether on campus, online, or in the workplace, we are all constantly bombarded with challenging questions. These can be particularly on Israel or more widely on the Jewish faith. Occasionally, some budding builders respond accurately and negotiate a respectful debate. More often, however, most do not know what and how to respond. In these instances, many are left with no recourse but to retreat from their Jewish identity and silence their own voice.
That silencing drives away a chance for the young Jewish voice to be heard. That silencing stops our allies from making themselves felt.
That is why The Jewish Stand exists.
Our Vision
The Jewish Stand strives to amplify and connect young Jews (and non-Jews) like yourself around the world. On this platform you will learn from young experts, scholars, and regular Jews going through the same struggles you face. You will read to educate yourself on the topics that are most burning in the Jewish world. You will respond to articles you disagree with or wish to correct. And you will challenge yourself to find your voice.
At the Jewish Stand, we aim to foster a conversation around the topics we care about deeply; Judaism and Israel.
Our categories are split as follows:
‘Our World’ – The Political Space, The Advocate’s Corner and Writer’s Response.
‘Jewish Life’ – Philosophy and Religion, Community, and Culture and Entertainment
‘Extra’ – and all the rest.
Whether you hold a Rabbinic ordination, PhD, MSc, LLB, BA or none of the above, we encourage you to read, learn and grow around the latest topics and intellectual thought written by our diverse range of writers from across the political and religious spectrum. We believe deeply that everyone’s voice is crucial, and hope that readers will feel empowered to submit their own contributions.
If you want to enter a submission, send an email to our Editorial team: editorial@thejewishstand.com
Our vision is to encourage you to be proud of your Jewish identity, and to equip you with a deeper connection to our community and with the knowledge to venture out and spread the light Judaism brings to the world. We ask only you show respect and come with a willingness to engage and help us build our future. Through our learning we will build strength, and we pray to create a more peaceful future.
Through knowledge, we foster peace.
ה׳ עֹז לְעַמּוֹ יִתֵּן ה׳ יְבָרֵךְ אֶת עַמּוֹ בַשָּׁלוֹם
May the Lord give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace (Psalms 29:11).
